Ki Power

[ Back to Rules ]

Ki is the energy of life. Often equated with the soul, the effect of Ki on people is usually rather subtle. However, all living things have ki. Martial artists can harness their ki to do amazing things, and in this roleplay, those heights are so profound that proper training can practically make a demigod out of a man.

Ki amplifies the all around physical characteristics of a person, from strength, to speed, to durability, without the requirement of having incredibly huge muscles, making them very adaptable and robust combatants. Ki fighters, as they're called, can also launch bursts of their own life force on command, called ki blasts and ki streams. They can also sense other bodies of ki in their vicinity, and even use their ki to fly at incredible speeds. In emergencies, they can cause their aura of ki to explode about them, making for effective air brakes and pushing away objects that come too close for comfort.

Characters who possess supernormal Ki powers cannot also have a Physical power level.

Statistics and Details

Ki fighters possess the following statistics. These statistics are all based off of the character's power level:

  • 100% eyesight
  • 110% Ki energy senses
  • 30% natural charge
  • 10% natural charge rate
  • 70% natural charge capacity
  • 200% durability
  • 400% stamina
  • 50% movement speed
  • 50% concentration

Eyesight

As its name implies, Eyesight is that which the character can freely see and perceive with his or her eyes. Sneak attacks from behind are unfortunately insensible by a Ki warrior, at least where Eyesight is concerned. At base, a Ki fighter can see objects moving up to 1x his or her KiPL. This is a free action which costs no stamina nor takes up any kind of post.

Energy Senses

Ki fighters are capable of sensing Ki energy, at a rate of up to 1.1x of their KiPLs. Unlike their eyesight, Ki warriors can sense this energy within the area without having to directly look at the source. While Ki warriors are capable of sensing any source of Ki, even those that are much stronger than them, if those Ki sources move faster than their sensory rates, they will lose 'sight' of them. It's important to note that all living beings possess Ki. Thus, Ki warriors can still sense a psion's or mage's mortal-level Ki energy, if they have any. Sensing Ki energy is a free action, necessitating no preparation or stamina.

Natural Charge

Natural Charge is the term used in AltDBZ for the statistic that determines a character's base power output. It also determines the least amount of stamina a character may expend when activating techniques or otherwise performing many other actions. For Ki warriors, their natural charge begins at 30% of their KiPL.

Natural Charge Rate

Natural Charge Rate is the term used in AltDBZ for the statistic that determines the rate at which a character may gather power. Ki warriors may charge at a rate of 10% of their KiPL per post, up to their Charge Capacity (see next statistic). Charging is not such an easy action to take; it is considered a Focus action. A focus action is that which may only be activated if the character in question isn't on the receiving end of any lasting effect or damage that exceeds his or her Concentration (see below) for the entire post that the action takes place; no actions such as attacking or blocking may be carried out. A character that's charging may still move freely while doing so, unless otherwise hindered. Upon successfully charging, a Ki warrior need not use that energy immediately. It may be saved up for a later action, giving the character a strategic extra boost in energy to be used at his or her choosing.

Natural Charge Capacity

Natural Charge Capacity is the term used in AltDBZ for the statistic that determines the maximum power output and/or damage. Ki fighters begin with a 70% charge capacity. No technique nor ability may exceed this statistic without increasing said capacity first.

Durability

Ki fighters possess superhuman bodies. Thus they are gifted with a set amount of durability which is always active as a gimme ability. They need not waste any actions nor stamina to be granted their innate durability. The negative aspect of Ki durability is that warriors take the hits themselves; broken bones, blood, split skin and the like are commonplace when Ki fighters do battle. At base, Ki fighters begin play with 200% innate durability. If that number is reduced to 0, they may lose consciousness, become incapacitated, or even die.

Stamina

As the name implies, stamina is the statistic which determines just how much strength and energy a Ki fighter possesses. Warriors begin play with 400% stamina. Stamina is commonly depleted as a Ki fighter performs actions, such as attacking or activating techniques. Usually, when activating non-damaging techniques, a Ki fighter will have his stamina reduced by his natural charge. When performing attacks, even if they miss, a Ki warrior will lose stamina equal to the intended damage. When a character loses all stamina, he or she will lose consciousness, passing out and becoming completely vulnerable.

Movement Speed

Without having to waste any stamina nor actions, Ki fighters possess the ability to move at superhuman speeds. This innate movement speed starts out at 50% of his or her KiPL. Characters are permitted to move around and/or fly while attacking, charging, or activating any techniques. It is important to note that no character is capable of moving faster than he or she can see or sense.

Concentration

Concentration is a statistic in AltDBZ which helps to determine whether or not a warrior may carry out a Focus action, such as charging. All characters begin play with 10% concentration, and if that threshold is exceeded during one post, either by damage or any lasting duress, a character may not carry out focus actions during that entire post.

Ki Gimmes

All Ki warriors possess the following gimmes. These gimmes typically deal with superhuman ability and energy manipulation.

Aura Explosions

Ki fighters may choose to release the powerful ki energy stored within them in a generic, all-encompassing fashion, resulting in a short-distance shockwave that often comes in handy as a panic button, or a surprise attack. Because this also functions as a form of air-brakes (100% KiPL in braking force on the character using it), the character cannot also move under their own power during the same post as an aura explosion is used.

The attack expands from the user for approximately 10 feet, at 50% of the user's KiPL, and strikes for 100% KiPL in concussive force. Concussive force does not cause any direct damage to powered characters -- it simply pushes targets it strikes. However, being propelled by concussive force into a solid object can cause up to a third of its force in damage, depending on distance and the victim's ability.

Ki aura explosions cost 30% KiPL stamina drain to activate. Normally, a ki wielder can use an aura explosion only once per fight -- this can be expanded through the Additional Aura Explosions KiCT.

Flight

Ki warriors may fly at a rate equal to, or lower, to their movement speed statistic.

Superhuman Strength

Ki warriors possess incredible strength, without need of a technique activation or the like. It is always there. When choosing to attack someone with said strength, it will be at a rate equal to their movement speed and their natural charge in damage. A warrior may choose to divide his strikes into several, dividing his natural charge among each strike as he sees fit. He may even hurl Ki blasts and throw punches in the same post, as long as collectively they do not exceed his natural charge.

Ki Blasts

Ki warriors can generate generic blasts of spiritual energy without having to activate them via techniques. These blasts can deal up to their natural charge in damage, and will always travel at 50% of their KiPL. A warrior may choose to divide these blasts into several, dividing his natural charge among each strike as he sees fit. He may even hurl Ki blasts and throw punches in the same post, as long as collectively they do not exceed his natural charge.

Ki Beams

A Ki Beam is a focused stream of Ki. Rather than a singular blast capable of exploding something upon contact, a beam is a continuous rush of energy, pushing back a target at the same time as it obliterates it completely. Once a Ki Beam is unleashed, a Ki warrior may not move from his spot. He may swing his hands around, thus switching targets with the beam, or deactivate the beam and be able to move on the next post. Aside from movement, no other actions can be taken while a Ki Beam is active, such as activating techniques or performing additional attacks. Should the character have a beam active and have his Concentration breached, the Ki beam will be deactivated.

At base, a Ki Beam will strike at a target with the character's natural charge in damage, moving at 50% speed. With an activated beam, a character may charge it while it's active, though at a rate equal to half of his Natural Charge Rate (see above). Ki Beams cannot be divided into multiple beams. They are singular and cohesive, at base.

Characters on the receiving end of a Ki Beam will be hard pressed to ignore it. The beam will continue hitting them, pushing them back, disallowing movement unless they can break through the force (as in damage) of the beam. Only then will they have a chance to escape.

Charging

As mentioned above, Ki warriors can charge at a rate of 10% of their KiPL. While they gather energy, they may move around to dodge attacks, but cannot perform any others, such as attacking, defending, or activating techniques in the same post they're charging. Charging is considered a Focus action.

The Realm of Ki

Techs created with ki generally deal with life, death, and similar concepts, aside from simple extensions of what ki fighters have already. Ki techs can enhance or degrade almost any existing aspect of a person's battle ability, from durability to sense detection. Of the three types, ki has the easiest time creating, increasing, healing, or spawning life, and that which is produced tends to stay longest or be permanent, whereas other powers might not be able to or might require a very long time to research similar things. Ki also specializes in explosions, fire, and transfer of energies, as well as optimization of power in general. Ki fighters can develop "transformations" or "modes" where their power becomes several times stronger without harm or disadvantage for a short while, whereas psions and mages have a much greater difficulty with it and may require the assistance of natural (racial) transformations and modes to augment what they wish. One often overlooked quality of ki technique potential is that ki fighters can be very proficient in decay and disruption attacks aimed at penetrating strong defenses and prohibitive obstacles quickly.
