Controlled Player Characters

[ Back to Rules ]

Controlled Player Characters (also known as CPCs, formerly known as non-competitive characters and static characters) are special characters with super powers or abilities, like competitive characters, except that they are not held to the same rules of progression and growth. Additionally, CPCs require express permission from a member of the story staff to be used. Unlike competitive characters, CPCs are not given out freely. They are usually given to help flesh out needed roles in a setting, but can be issued by staff for other purposes. Anyone can request to control a CPC, but the staff can deny any such request for any reason -- usually, only those ideas that benefit the room as a whole rather than self-gratifying concepts are allowed. Staff will generally also not allow CPC concepts that could as easily be filled by a regular competitive character.

CPCs fall into the eminent domain of the AltDBZ staff. While the story staff try to let players do with CPCs as they wish, they reserve the right to sieze any amount of control over a CPC that they wish, including but not limited to: retcon (nullify after the fact) or force any scenes or actions, force a reconfiguration of powers, cause death or deletion, and swap controlling players. These actions that interfere with a player's freedom to play a CPC are often discussed with fellow staff members first to avoid unnecessary or biased conflicts. They are reserved for points when a players actions with a CPC have severely disrupted the room, or if a player fails to play a CPC when required.

Rules Adherence

Though CPCs can be literally anything between a humble mortal and a god without any effort aside from mere creation, it may seem that they are immune to the rules that most powered characters must deal with. While they can be selectively immune to many of these rules, they may choose to follow them anyway. In addition, there are several rules that even a CPC may never violate.

Here are some examples of things you can not do with a CPC:

  • Act exempt to the "Victims Call Effects" rule in the General section.
  • Resurrect characters at will without staff permission.
  • Supercede or replace the current structure of godly power in the room.
  • Give other characters techniques or PL without staff permission.
  • Participate in any kind of plot without the plot moderator's permission.

In order to have your CPC concept approved, the handling staffer must recognize at least one competitive character you own that you use with reasonable frequency. If you are seen to stop playing your competitive character(s) and instead play with your CPC, your CPC playing priveledges may be suspended until your competitive characters become more active.

Tag Requirements

CPCs must state their character type somewhere obvious in their tags.

Reverse Compatibility

All characters that were Static Characters, Noncompetitive Characters, Plot Characters, or Source Characters are now immediately converted into Controlled Player Characters. Please change their tag titles appropriately. If there is an issue with this, please take it up with a story staffer.
